“Unlike in Germany, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, where democracy was conquered peacefully, Romania was the only country where the former leaders, as well as the leaders after Ceausescu’s execution, found a way to use propagandistic formulas that justified the the army’s taking to the streets and the killing of over 1,600 Romanians,” Basescu said.
About his visit to Germany, on the occasion of the celebration of 20 years since the fall of the Berlin wall, Basescu said he was invited by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “This event marks the moment when Germany started to be reunified and we are happy that this important event put an end to a sad reality after WW2. A second significance is related to the moment when the communist system collapsed,” Basescu said.
The head of state said he invited young Arion Emil Banciu to join him to Germany. Banciu’s mother, Leontina Banciu, was shot in Timisoara on December 17th, 1989, and her body was taken to Bucharest to be cremated.
“It is a great joy for me to have here a descendant of a hero and, though the protocol prevents him from taking part in the ceremony, he must know that Berlin is the place where the collapse of communism started.
