“Overdue loan payments rose 4-fold from Sept. 2008 compared to the corresponding period of last year. Weight of overdue loan payments in own capitals jumped 10.5 percent from 3.4 percent in the reference period last year, whereas the overdue loan payment weight per total assets rose 0.92 percent from 0.22 percent last year”, said Georgescu.
He stressed that as regards these loan payment defaults a leveling in their rise can be noted, so that it is expected a downward trend in the future, most likely starting next year. BNR official underlined that banks profitability in Romania declined more than 5-fold, in nine months, from 4.4 billion lei to 690 million lei, but this is explained by the fact that the solvability indicator, an average per system, is of 13.7 percent, all banks exceeding the 10 percent threshold.
“This demonstrates that the banking system is a solid one and at the same time BNR says it has all conditions to keep the banks solidity, in the case of a stoppage of lending, as well as in order to allow the banks to bring new amounts under the form of capital”, explained Florin Georgescu.
