“Romania continues to rank last in Europe, in terms of press independence, a fact mirrored by her position in the report of the Reporters without Borders report. Thus, Romania ranks 50th , down against 2008 and 2007, in the most recent classification of press freedom in the world, published by the prestigious Reporters without Borders organization,” reads a release made public on Tuesday by the Media Organizations’ Convention.
Representatives of the signing associations believe that, in order to improve the situation, there are few measures to be taken: strengthening legislation to prevent excessive concentration of property in the media and supporting the media industry through proper fiscal policies, able to guarantee their financial independence.
In their opinion, the future president should sign the European Chart for the Freedom of the Press.
