Almost 70 percent of the respondents say today politicians are a good deal morally worse than prior to 1989, 55.8 percent considering the communist dictatorship had more respect for the citizens. As for the economic standpoint, 63.9 percent of the polled maintained things are worse off.
20 years since the events in 1989, almost 42 percent of Romanians think Romania has not left behind its communist past. Despite that, more than 60 percent would not prefer to see Romania turning back to a Ceausescu like regime. But the percentage of those yearning for the past stands at 22.3 percent.
At the question “What do you think events in Dec. 1989 represented?”, 37.7 percent of the polled replied it was a revolution, 24.7 percent – a conspiracy concocted locally and 20.7 percent – a conspiracy devised abroad. More than a third of Romanians say the toppling of the communist regime was damaging for the country, 40 percent having an opposite opinion.
BCS poll was conducted over Oct. 15-19, on a sample of 1,222 people, representative nationwide, with an error margin of +/-2.9 percent. The poll was commissioned by Marsh Copsey + Associates, Inc. – Washington DC, USA.
