The announcement was made Thursday by the interim Foreign Minister Catalin Predoiu in a joint press conference with chief of Moldovan diplomacy Iurie Leanca.
“Bilateral relation and support for the European roadmap of the Republic of Moldova are absolute priorities of Romania’s foreign policy. In this context, we hail the opening proved by the new administration in Chisinau in its relation with Romania and with the European Union”, said Catalin Predoiu.
He emphasized that Romania had for a long time its agenda of multiple cooperation projects with the Republic of Moldova blocked and appreciated that the current officials in Chisinau have clearly expressed their political will to use the existing opportunities.
“We have in view some important steps in the immediate future. On Friday, the two premiers will sign the Convention on the small border traffic. On Friday as well, together with Minister Leanca, I will sign the bilateral inter-government agreement on the state border points between Romania and the Republic of Moldova and the amending Protocol to the inter-governmental agreement signed in 1992, in Bucharest, on the mutual promotion and protection of investments”, said Catalin Predoiu.
As regards Romania’s consulates general in Cahul and Balti, set to be opened in Jan. 2010 at the latest, Predoiu said they will offer fast and quality consular services.
Likewise, he said that the Romanian side will give an answer soon to Chisinau Administration’s request on the opening of a consulate general in Iasi. In his turn, Moldovan Minister Iurie Leanca said that the document will serve, first of all, the Moldovan citizens living in the border area.
“This accord will be beneficial, first of all, to the Republic of Moldova citizens who, because of not too favorable conditions in the Republic of Moldova, were isolated and without visas, and you know how difficult it is to get these visas: they cannot travel neither to Romania or, in another context, to the Schengen Space. The implementation of this accord will create favorable conditions for the citizens living in the border zone”, said Leanca.
The signing of the Convention on small border traffic with the Republic of Moldova was initiated by Romania in March 2008, during the mandate of the former ForMin, Adrian Cioroianu. Romania promoted this initiative as a member state of the EU because similar documents have been signed by the majority of states at the outer border of EU with their close neighbors.
The accord allows inhabitants in the Romanian-Moldovan border zone to travel without visas to Romania, on a well defined distance from the border. They will receive a local small border traffic permit, valid for one year, at least.
