‘Let us not forget that Traian Basescu for a long time had 50-60 percent in the surveys. At this moment, we know this very well, Traian Basescu leads the other contenders by a large margin, his rating is above the PD-L’s and I am convinced he will enter the runoff with more than 40 percent of the votes cast in the first round’, Flutur said. Romania is to hold a presidential election on Nov. 22, with the second round of voting scheduled on Dec. 6.
Flutur said Basescu remains ‘the most popular politician in Romania’ and it is for this reason that all kind of ‘harassment’ is attempted against him, including that fact that news about him is banned by certain media trusts. According to Flutur, the surveys that place Basescu otherwise than on the top spot are ‘rigged’ and do nothing else than act as an ‘anesthetic’ for the parties that commission them.
Flutur does not believe that the fact the PD-L is now governing alone puts the party at a disadvantage, but he accuses the Social Democrats (PSD) for having left the power, since they were not at all interested ‘in the economic crisis, or the money for pensions and wages, but they were only interested in making (party leader) Mircea Geoana look like a victim’.
He insisted it is not easy to manage the downturn, but he added the PD-L is a responsible party. Flutur also called on the Liberals to join the Democratic Liberals to make up a future center- right government.
‘The PD-L remains the center-right force that will continue to back the state reform, the force that will rule Romania in the period ahead, in the next three terms at least, since Romania needs basic reforms’, he stressed. The PD-L future ‘will be a very good one, as the presidential elections will be won by Traian Basescu’, Flutur said.
