President Traian Basescu, who runs for a new term-in-office in the presidential race, supported by PD-L (Democrat Liberal Party) addressed people from Sibiu in the Big Square of Sibiu (central Romania) about his achievements and failures, considering himself more courageous than former presidents of Romania of after 1990.

“2009 Romania is no longer Romania of Adrian Nastase and Ion Iliescu of 2004. I have been the president who had more courage than Ion Iliescu and Emil Constantinescu altogether,” said Traian Basescu. The head of the state criticised the former presidents of Romania, stressing that Ion Iliescu did not fight against the communist system after 1990, whereas Emil Constantinescu did not defeat the wretched system.

According to his own statement Traian Basescu did not manage to defeat the wretched system either in the first five year-mandate. Among his achievements Traian Basescu mentioned Romania’s EU and NATO membership, introduction of the flat tax, introduction of guaranteed minimum pension, rise on the average salary and pension, introduction of 150-lei pensions for workers of former agricultural cooperatives, declassification of the archive of former Securitatea, expansion of Romania’s territory with 9,000 sq.m. following the Hague-based law suit.

Among his main projects of future Baserscu stressed the continuation of the state modernization by the Parliament’s reform, development of two economic sectors – agriculture and tourism, assuring of equity in Romania, financial and medical assistance for Romanians from rural areas, less money for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).
