Basescu: Nastasiu, a prosecutor rejected by system and recovered by politicians during campaign

President Traian Basescu said on Monday evening, at the Cotroceni Palace, that Prosecutor Ciprian Nastasiu was rejected by the judicial system for not applying the measures meant to watch the Syrian businessman Omar Hayssam at large, who was accused of terrorism and kidnapping the three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005.

“As for the statements made by Prosecutor Nastasiu, I think he is a man who, after an important professional failure, manages to be quite disagreeable when trying to become an author of books together with Mr Gaetan.

It goes without saying, they were SF books, but books that both harm this country and discredit the institutions of the Romanian State. It seems that, for these gentlemen, the electoral interest has no upper limit as regards decency in behaviour and action,” said President Basescu after, in the morning, they launched the book titled “Robbing Romania,” which was published by former Prosecutor Ciprian Nastasiu, who worked with the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism, together with the Romanian-born American writer Victor Gaetan.

According to Basescu, Nastasiu, who “today is teaching lessons about his files,” is a prosecutor who “was rejected by justice” through the resolution of the Supreme Council of Magistrates. The Head of State added that this happened as Nastasiu was the prosecutor who requested the release of Omar Hays sam, “after which he forgot” to take the measures meant to watch him at large.

“There seems to be a health certificate and at that time Omar Hayssam was not convicted. But his obligation to take the measures meant to watch Hayssam was the legal elementary obligation. He did not put the surveillance warrant into practice,” said Basescu. He added that a prosecutor “who was rejected by the system he belonged to was recovered by politicians” at the height of the campaign.

“I think it is high time I appealed to politicians to come back to the decency of the campaign. It is not by means of files stolen from DGIPI [Directorate General of Information and Domestic Protection] or by means of prosecutors recovered by political parties that one wins an election,” added Basescu. The President also referred to his Social Democrat rival Mircea Geoana.

“As for the book written by Mr Gaetan, with the cooperation of the so-called professional man Nastasiu, I would like to suggest to Mr Geoana not to use his family friends any more with a view to attacking a candidate for President,” said the Head of State.
Basescu mentioned again the fact that he had been in charge of the crisis cell, which managed to recover the three Romanian journalists that were imprisoned in Iraq, in spring 2005, and added that the structures of the Romanian State were capable of supporting other states too in recovering their imprisoned citizens that were held hostages.

“It seems we have a candidate for President nobody was aware of, Omar Hayssam, as people speak more about him than about all the candidates these days. Of course, I am taking note of the fact that some people’s despair has gone so far that they lend themselves to a dirty game.
This is why I would take the liberty of reminding them of the fact that I am the President who was in charge of the crisis cell and who managed to recover the three Romanian journalists that were imprisoned in Iraq,” said Basescu.
