At a press conference on Monday in Bucharest, Nastasiu introduced his book ‘Pradarea Romaniei’ (Romania Plundered), written together with the Romanian-born US author Victor Gaetan in which he offers details of the alleged involvement of President Basescu in the Omar Hayssam case.
Nastasiu claimed that on July 2, 2008, one day before being dismissed from office, he asked the Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation to prolong the authorisation for call interceptions for several people under the energy espionage file.
‘There was an authorisation to monitor the activity of this grouping, not under a warrant, but under an authorisation issued by the Supreme Court of Justice. And yes, even the ‘moguls’ were involved – Dan Voiculescu, Bogdan Chireac, Elena Udrea, Stolojan, Cocos and Verestoy Attila,’ said Nastasiu. According to the former prosecutor, these politicians were suspected of having committed crimes in connection to the Marco energy grouping.
He added that another prosecutor that investigated the case, Doru Cristescu, is now a ‘young pensioner.’ Another episode narrated in the book regards his meetings with President Basescu. Nastasiu claims that he asked the President for a private meeting to talk about the people in the presidential entourage who were investigated as part of the DIICOT probe.
He said that Basescu refused him in a phone call saying that he does not want to meet anyone from the Public Prosecution Ministry before things are clarified, and that he does not want to give him advice, but what he does should be legal.
On the other hand, Nastasiu said he would have been backed in the investigation of infamous businessman Hayssam by former Prosecutor General Ilie Botos, but Botos’ replacement, Laura Codruta Kovesi, would have put pressure on him, not allowing him to leave for Syria to interrogate Hayssam. Nastasiu also said that Basescu is an ‘authoritarian president who gives orders to Prosecutor Kovesi.’
