Romania has highest annual inflation rate in EU in October 2009

Romania had the highest annual inflation rate in the European Union in October 2009, namely 4.3 percent, whereas the annual inflation rate in the European Union was 0.5 percent as against 0.3 percent in September, according to a revised estimate published on Monday by Eurostat.

As for the euro zone Eurostat confirmed a rapid estimate published on October 30, according to which the annual inflation rate in the euro zone decreased to – 0.1 percent in October 2009 as against – 0.3 percent in September 2009. October 2009 is the fifth consecutive month in which consumer prices in the 16 states using the euro are in the negative.

In October 2008 the lowest annual inflation rates were in Ireland (- 2.8 percent), Estonia (- 2,1 percent) and Portugal (- 1.6 percent). At the opposite end there are Romania, with a 4.3 percent increase in prices, Hungary, 4.2 percent, and Poland, 3.8 percent. In October 2009 the annual inflation rate decreased in 11 member states and increased in 15 member states as against the previous month.
