Antonescu stressed he has ‘the Liberal beliefs of a man who is neither an economist nor a businessman’; according to him, the Romanian state and the political class should offer public policies in economy that ’should give chances for development and offer open capitalism’. The legislation should offer ‘predictability, stability and advantages to investors’, he added.
The Liberal leader, who runs for president in the Nov. 22 polls, insisted the president has an important role in establishing the dialogue with the economic players and he added that if he wins the elections, he will be ‘a partner’ and he will ’speak to’ the businessmen, since ‘a president cannot do everything by himself, without carrying out dialogue’.
‘The president should pledge the idea that when we speak of the nation’s interest, of the budget or GDP, we speak in fact of the economic players’ activity. Also, the president should know that populism and electoral rhetoric can bring votes, can stir emotions, but they cannot influence the real economy, because it is not sensitive to populism’, he said.
Antonescu gave details of his party’s economic programme, stressing that it is former Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian who drafted the platform. The PNL wants the VAT to be gradually cut from 19 percent to 15-16 percent and the flat tax rate to be cut to some 10-12 percent from the current 16 percent, Antonescu stressed.
