President Traian Basescu argues for another structure of the Upper Council of Magistrates (CSM) so as to allow the access of the civil society members to the body. ‘I personally argue for another structure of the Upper Council of Magistrates.

There are there only prosecutors and judges elected by prosecutors and judges, which makes them vulnerable with respect to their demands of those they control. Therefore, we should modify the law that establishes the CSM structure and give the civil society access to the CSM. They should be people who are not part of the justice system, who have enough training as to be able to be part of the process of analysis of the judges and prosecutors’, Basescu said in an interview with www.bleen.ro.

He pointed out the politicians can intervene in the legislation relating to justice, but they cannot intervene in enforcing the act of justice. ‘It is not possible to have a perfectly tight system, as it is now; it is reason for dissatisfaction to everybody and to me as a politician, since I promised to modernise justice. This hasn’t been done during my term and this is one of the things I reproach myself and that probably the Romanians reproach me,’ Basescu said.
