The Romanian President offered the National Order ‘For Merit’ in the rank of Commander to Daniel Mariaschin, on October 8, for his activity as member of the Elie Wiesel International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust. Iulian Fota, presidential adviser on national security matters, officiated the decoration ceremony.
The decoration of Daniel Mariaschin, together with other members of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania, represents a symbolic gesture of appreciation of the personal efforts of Daniel Mariaschin and of the other members of the Commission too, and also of the special merits proved by the Commission in its scientific research, reads a MAE release.
‘Romania proved, through its efforts towards the implementation of the Recommendations of the Report of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust, that the assumption of the historical past and the civic education in the spirit of tolerance and mutual understanding are the basic principles of a democratic society based on the cultivation of human values,’ said Bogdan Aurescu in his allocution at the ceremony.
In his turn, Daniel Mariaschin praised Romania’s commitment in the sense of the assumption of its historical past and keeping alive the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, showing that ‘Romania established a high standard in Europe in terms of measures and good practices adopted in supporting the fundamental human values’, referring mainly to Romania’s progress in fighting anti- Semitism, the adoption of the Report of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust, as well as the recent inauguration of the Memorial of Holocaust.
Secretary of State for strategic affairs with MAE Bogdan Aurescu is paying an extended working visit to the US and Canada, over November 12-22. His visit agenda includes meetings with Anthony Blinken, deputy adviser of the US President and adviser on national security of the US Vice President, Pamela Quanrud, deputy assistant for Northern, Central Europe and the Baltic States of the Secretary of State, Nancy McEldowney, first deputy of the assistant for European Affairs of the Secretary of State, Dan Russel, the deputy assistant for Russia, Ukraine and Belarus of the Secretary of State and other US officials under the National Security Council of Pentagon.
Moreover, on the same occasion, there will be continued the talks on Romania joining the Visa Waiver programme. The Romanian Secretary of State’s tour will continue with meetings in Ottawa, on November 18 and 19, whose objective will be the resumption and re-stimulation of the bilateral political dialogue, in the context of the 90th anniversary this year of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
