The WTM, now in its 30th edition, is the most important event in the field of tourism worldwide, dedicated exclusively to professionals, and which benefits of a total surface area of 44,000 sq m and more than 5,000 exhibitors from the entire world. Romania’s stand, organized by the MT, covered 225 sq m and hosted 31 tour operators. There were promoted mainly such tourist destinations for the winter season and the ‘Christmas in Maramures’ programme, and also cultural events such as the George Enescu International Music Festival.
Secretary of State Sorin Munteanu, who headed the MT delegation, participated also in the Minister’s Summit at the WTM, and had a meeting with the general manager of the Reed Exhibition complex. He also gave interviews to the pan-European and British media (Eurosport, Euronews, Sky News). Moreover, Sorin Munteanu had a series of talks with the representatives of some of the tour operators having already promoted Romanian tourist destinations and who wanted to increase the number of offers involving Romania.
He also met with the manager of Balkan Holidays, a tour operator promoting Romanian ski programmes. The meeting focused on the possibility to resume promotion by the British company of holiday programmes at the Romanian seaside beginning with 2011. Sorin Munteanu said the MT was ready to support the initiative of Balkan Holidays. The two also discussed on the necessity of a more flexible pricing policy practiced by the hotels on the Romanian Black Sea coast and also on the need for a London-Constanta flight and intensified promotion on the British market.
The Balkan Holidays management could pay a visit to Romania in next year’s spring, to evaluate the facilities on the Romanian seaside and to discuss with the hotel owners. The representatives of the Thomas Cook tour operator were also interested in the possibility of intensifying a common marketing operation to promote Romania as a tourist destination, including by increasing and diversifying the offers from Romania to be included in the operator’s 2010/2011 winter catalogue.
The talks on the common promotion of Romania as tourist destination on the British market will be continued in Bucharest, on the occasion of the visit of the representatives of Thomas Cook in the following months in Romania.
