The three televisions signed an agreement earlier in the day on organising two debates with the candidates in Sunday’s elections for president – one of the debates should have been held among five candidates on Wednesday and another one with the top three presidential hopefuls, according to the surveys, on Friday.
A TVR press release announced that the three televisions noted the refusal of four of the seven presidential candidates to take part in the televised debate that was to be hosted by TVR.
‘Therefore, we consider that given these circumstances, such a broadcast could no longer attain the set goal. We underscore that the initiative of the three televisions was launched as a result of the increased public interest in organising face-to-face debates among the candidates as well as following the candidates’ repeated requests to take part in such direct confrontation’, the release said. TVR announced it remains open to the organisation of such a public debate among the candidates to Romania’s top job.
