National Liberal Party (PNL) candidate for Romania’s President Crin Antonescu said in his speech delivered in front of his supporters belonging to the intellectual environment, on Thursday, that politicians do not develop their finest instincts in the political battles, but despite all this, the PNL official says he cannot allow himself to do anything just to win.

‘In the presence of the power, in the political field, there are not your best instincts that sharpen, it is not your nicest, fairest side that comes to light. In the political struggle you are never a politician concerned with the moral dimension of the political act, with its good purposes, and you must not forget that your first duty to your supporters, to your own aspirations, to this good part of your intents, is to win.

I am in a campaign which I must win (…) and I always have to choose my means. If it is true that ends justify means, and this is true in politics, winning these elections is but a means, but no end. This is the reason why I cannot use any means to win the elections, which I have to win nonetheless,’ said Antonescu.
The PNL official refereed inter alia to the relationship the elites have with the politicians, stressing that the elites have been lately attempted to get annexed, to attract them in a manner, which was of no use for the society.

‘The elites are not voted on, they are not appointed through a presidential decree, the elites are not annexed, they are not made use of. (…) There was a very big difference between the attitude, which those who reached very high power positions, at a certain moment, had toward the elites, a genuine authentic attitude, like that by President Emil Constantinescu, of ex-PM Petre Roman, all from the academic environment. (…).

On the other hand, I have witnessed a thorough but false preoccupation with annexing the elites, an exchange of goods and pleasures, of mutually granted decorations and medals, wherefrom the society had no benefit, after all, because one politician or another could win ballots, because an outstanding intellectual could win, god knows what, ‘ Antonescu explained.
PNL President Crin Antonescu, on Thursday was attending the debate on the topic the Role the President plays in drawing up a national political project on Romania’s future in the EU, and in the society of knowledge, organized by the Romanian Academic Forum.
