She pointed out that, following the Court of Appeal ruling on Thursday, no obstacles remained for the organization of this referendum, namely to pass to an unicameral legislative and to a reduced number of MPs.
Macovei said that, during the Social Democrat Party (PSD) ruling and the mandate of former president Ion Iliescu, no such consultations were organized because the decisions were supposed to be taken by the politicians alone.
“But this time people are called to tell their opinion on the political decisions, ahead of adopting them and what they will decide must be mandatory for the politicians”, said Macovei.
The democrat liberal EMP stressed that all the candidates in the presidential elections could have debated the topic of the reduction of the MPs number but, with Traian Base scu’s exception, none has done it.
“Mircea Geoana never discussed this subject in depth, on the contrary he voted twice, in the Parliament, unconstitutionally, for the blockage of the president’s right to call for a referendum, proving he is an opponent”, Macovei said. She added that the starting of the revision process of the Constitution will facilitate its amendment in some other fields, including in the Justice one.
She said she was going to make approaches for the amendment of the fundamental law in the sense of the introduction of magistrates’ accountability to the people and not to some political factors. PD-L EMP also stressed that 14 of the European Union 27 member states have unicameral parliaments and there is no provision at the Union level as for the number of chambers a legislative should have, contrary to what was said.
