“We are interested in the Secretary general’s vision on relation with the countries in the Balkans, a zone of great security interest for Romania and as regards the new concept of NATO strategy of security guarantees for the Alliance’s members we have the Romanian standpoints, which in principle are based on the idea of NATO deterrence capacity in case of security risks for Alliance’s member states”, said Basescu.
The head of state pointed out that the Alliance’s engagement in Afghanistan will also feature on the talks agenda with the Secretary general. “I will lay the accent on the need of speeding up the training process of the Afghan army, set to lead, the same as in Iraq, to the foreign troops relief on Afghanistan’s territory, surely with all the implications related to what is happening in Pakistan at the moment”, underlined Traian Basescu.
As well, another approached subject refers to the proliferation of drug production on Afghanistan territory which, in the opinion of President Basescu, “must be solved because the outcome of this production is the creation of financial resources for the talibans in view to keep a high level of their military capacity”. The head of state also added he wished to find out Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s vision for Ukraine and Georgia, countries backed by Romania without reservation for getting their MAP – Membership Action Plans even during the NATO Summit organized in Bucharest, in 2008.
