Traian Basescu pleads for EU unitary foreign policy President Traian Basescu on Tuesday, in Targu Mures (central Romania), pleaded for an EU unitary foreign policy in several fields and emphasized the advantages of the new constitutional treaty, which is also known as the Lisbon Treaty. Attending the debate on “Romania in 2020: Future Prospects,” which was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Head of State said that the new constitutional treaty, which might come into force this very year, gave more power to the European Parliament without leading to a dissolution of the national state, but, on the contrary, to correcting some drawbacks that have been quite obvious in the course of time. Thus, among other things, through the new status given by the Lisbon Treaty, the regulations of the European Parliament will be able to be applied to all EU members. The Head of State said that, by this provision, they can avoid situations similar to the one that appeared at the height of the gas crisis when, a EU unitary policy in the energy field lacking, some countries made a pipeline that came directly from Russia, under the North Sea, without caring about the situation they forced the East European countries to face. “Of course, a unitary energy policy lacking, some countries made a pipeline that came directly from Russia, under the North Sea, they did not care about the situation they forced the East European countries to face … This will not be possible any longer. As a Head of State participating in the negotiations for the new constitutional treaty, I can assure you that the dissolution of the states in favour of the gigantic power of Brussels is out of the question,” added Traian Basescu. The President also stressed the fact that the free movement of goods, of values, of money “compels us to think of our identity very well” and the element that best establishes everybody’s identity was culture. “We shall have to see to our cultural values being imparted to Europe for us to get identified according to culture and not according to the English language everybody wants to speak. Culture and customs must be the elements of our identity in the future,” concluded the President of the state.
President Traian Basescu to address Parliament on Tuesday

The Social Democratic leader Mircea Geoana on Thursday accused the head of the state of delaying the promulgation of the law giving power to the dismissed government to send the 2010 draft budget to Parliament, in an attempt to hide the real economic situation of the country.

‘By not sending the budget to Parliament, Traian Basescu and Emil Boc are only trying to avoid showing the real face of the economic situation of the country. The real plan of Traian Base scu, of Mr. Boc and of Mr. Stolojan is to layoff 20 percent of the employees in the public system.
That’s why they are afraid to send the budget to Parliament for we will see then how the reality looks’, Mricea Geoana said. Geoana also disclosed that, according to certain sources from the Ministry of Finance, the 2010 draft budget allots only 0.85 percent to Agriculture.

‘I see this delay serving two purposes: Traian Basescu and Emil Boc are trying to they try to make the Parliament responsible for everything, while hiding in the same time what happened when they remained alone at rule and especially to hide the fact they have no solutions and no economic plan for the country’, the PSD leader said.
President Traian Basescu on Thursday told the public television channel he would not promulgate the amendments to the law on organization and functioning of the government, last week adopted by the Parliament, before holding consultations with the political parties currently making the parliamentary majority.
