Social Democratic (P SD) leader Mircea Geoana, who runs for Romania’s president in Sunday’s election under the banner of the Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives, said on Friday he wants to be president because he has a project for Romania that targets a recovery of the economy and keeping of jobs; he stressed he will be a president of unity and he will strive for a single Romania.

‘I run for the highest position in the Romanian state because I have a project for Romania, I have a project for economic recovery, for keeping jobs, for the re-launch of the Romanian agriculture, for the development of the Romanian village and for what I want to do as a president of Romania – to have a single Romania, in which the poor man in the rural area and the child of a deprived family as well as the intellectual, and the worker and the farmer and the one who works in a bank or an international firm should have the right to be respected and should have the right to a correct life, based on honest work and based on performance and solidarity’, Geoana told an electoral debate with the main contenders President Traian Basescu and Liberal Party leader Crin Antonescu held at the Palace on Parliament.

The PSD chairman said the single Romania he wants to build should be based on the fundamental principles of honest labour, Christian family and the solidarity among people. ‘I firmly believe that at this time of trial we should be united and I’ll be a president of the Romanians’ unity. After several years of division and bickering, the Romanians feel the need to unite and to go on’, he stressed.

Geoana said he will have a relation of cooperation with the Government, with Parliament and the opposition. ‘It is important for me that this Government that I’m going to install by Christmas be based on a solid majority, be based on competence and I want to be a fair partner of this Government and of the Government to be set up after 2012. I’ll treat Parliament with respect.

I’ll treat the future opposition with respect and maybe with more respect than for those close to me’, he pointed out. The PSD candidate stressed he seeks to bring balance to the country, to bring political stability and ‘fresh ideas’. ‘I’ll be the president of great national projects, with continuity and I’ll be a fair and good president, more than anything else. I have a personality that unites people, I am not a person who divides people, I am not seeking rows, I am an educated, civilised, modest person’, Geoana said.
