The speeches of the three candidates were given in the established order by lots drawing. The first was Mircea Geoana, followed by Crin Antonescu and Traian Basescu. Mircea Geoana, President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), stated he chose to candidate for the highest position in the state because he has a project linked to Romania. “I put my trust into Romania as a whole, I think we must unite our forces, I will be the president of the united Romanians”, stated Geoana.
He also said he will treat Romania’s Parliament, the future opposition and those with different opinions with respect. “I will be a good and just president, I am not a man liking to divide people, a man seeking scandal”, said Geoana.
Crin Antonescu, President of the National Liberal Party (PNL), stated he chose to candidate to Romania’s Presidency “because he had to”. “I know it is a risking formula, but this is the truth”, stressed the liberal candidate. Crin Antonescu also said he is part of a generation with a lot of questions and too few answers.
“The truth is that Romania is led by a political class formed of the same people. We have thousands of plans on the paper and less transposed into reality. A president needs ideas and above all character”, underlined Crin Antonescu. The current Romania’s President Traian Basescu, supported by the Democrat Liberal Party (PD-L) thanked Romanians for their support in the past five years, using this occasion to sum up his mandate.
Traian Basescu spoke about the uninominal vote, the condemnation of communism, the handing over of the former Securitate files, the organization of the NATO Summit in Bucharest. Traian Basescu also referred to the mistakes during his mandate. “I had a mandate with accomplishments and failures, with mistakes, but never mistakes made on purpose”, said the current head of state.
