The current President Traian Basescu is running for a second term, with the backing of the Liberal Democratic Party (PD-L). The main political parties have nominated their leaders for the presidential race: M ircea Geoana runs on behalf of the Social Democratic Party (PSD); Crin Antonescu – for the National Liberal Party (PNL); Corneliu Vadim Tudor – for the Greater Romania Party (PRM); Kelemen Hunor – for the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR); Gigi Becali – for the Christian Democratic New Generation Party (PNG-CD).
Running as independents are current Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu; Eduard Constantin Manole; and Ninel Potirca – president of the Employers’ Association of Roma Businesspeople. Also on the list of presidential hopefuls are two representatives of the ‘green’ current: Remus Cernea of the Green Party (PV) and Ovidiu Iane – backed by the Romanian Ecologist Party (PER), as well as Constantin Rotaru, representative of the Socialist Alliance Party.
Under the Constitution, the President of Romania is elected by universal, equal, direct, secret and freely expressed suffrage. The President is elected for a 5-year term, renewable once; two successive terms are allowed.
