‘After five years of rows, the Romanian people today has the power to decide. It is high time we focused on really important things such as the fight against the economic crisis, the re-launch of jobs, the re-launch of industry.
On this beautiful day, we hope we could bring good news’, Geoana said. The Social Democratic (PSD) leader stressed he had voted in the referendum too, since he had supported a cut in the number of parliamentarians as early as in 2005; however, he pointed out that overlapping the presidential polls and the referendum is ‘a form of electoral trick’.
‘I voted in favour, but this will not replace a government with a president that should focus on the real problems, on jobs and on emerging of this crisis’, he added.
Geoana thanked the NGOs for their vigilance and support showed in the fight against massive attempts to rig the elections and he called on the state institutions not to let themselves be influenced in this respect.
Twenty years since re-gaining democracy, the Romanians have the right to free and fair elections, he insisted. The PSD president called on his contenders to show fair play both now and in the runoff vote and voiced hope the Romanians would turn out to vote in large numbers, since the stake of the poll goes beyond a person or a party banner.
‘It is about the way Romania will look in the next 20 years. Never have there been more important elections in the re-gained democracy of the Romanian people in the last 20 years or in this dramatic situation’, he argued. Geoana had a message of encouragement for the Romanians in the Republic of Moldova too, as he hailed the sacrifice and courage of those who ‘fought’ to impose the European values – namely the fall of the Chisinau communist rule.
