Asked by moderator Robert Turceascu to voice his main critiques against Mircea Geoana and PSD, Basescu said that his fundamental criticism relates to what he said was the demolishing of a Government in office on the verge of the presidential election and ‘incorrect’ reading of the Constitution, pointing to Article 85 of the Constitution that says Romania’s President designates a candidate for the office of the prime minister and appoints a Government on a confidence vote from Parliament.
In reply, Geoana said that Basescu in his political carer has a ‘bold tradition of destroying Governments.’
Basescu reproached Geoana of having demolished the Boc Government for electoral interests, but the PSD chief replied that Basescu was under the wrong impression that he would secure for himself a quiet tenure by bringing PSD to rule.
Presidential candidate Crin Antonescu of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and Basescu accused each other during the live debate on Friday of the main presidential contenders, with Antonescu highlighting the prosperity enjoyed by the people close to Basescu, and Basescu saying that Antonescu agreed with Romania’s early withdrawal from Iraq.
The PNL candidate gave a speech in which he hinted that the people close to the incumbent President are living well, unlike the rest of Romanians. ‘What we should talk about and you should have secured as Romania’s President is opportunity for each Romanian,’ Antonescu told Basescu. In his turn, President Basescu handed in to Antonescu a court file and asked him to read the final page and conclusions, in reaction to Antonescu’s mention of Basescu’s alleged yet unproved involvement in the controversial sale of the Romanian commercial fleet in the early 1990s.
‘I would like to tell Mr. Antonescu that elections are now won by lying. Here he may find the conclusions of the infamous Fleet case indicating that the 108 defendants did not incur any damage. This is the document that closed the fleet case,’ said Basescu.
