At the end of almost 30 days of political duel more than 18 million eligible electors are expected to the ballot boxes in order to elect the person to hold the supreme state office in the coming five years.
The first Romanian citizen casting the ballot in the Nov. 22 elections, Adina Giurgiu, 40 years old, was born in Maramures and emigrated to New Zealand in 1998.
Given the time zone difference, Romanians in 30 states all over the world started to vote prior to the start in the presidential elections and the referendum on Sunday being given in the country.
As such, on Saturday evening, at 8.00 p.m., Romania’s time, the vote started in Auckland, New Zealand, followed by Romanians in Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines. During the night, as well, the polling stations have been opened in China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, India, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, United Arab Emirates and Iran.
At 6.00 a.m., Romania’s time, Romanians in Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Kuwait, Qatar started to cast their ballots. At the same time with Romanians in the country, at 7.00 a.m., Romanians in the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Cyprus, Lithuania, Belarus, Turkey, Ukraine, South Africa, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Libya and Zimbabwe also started to cast their ballots.
The polling station in Auckland, New Zealand, is to close at 10.00 a.m., Romania’s time, and 9.00 p.m. the local time. Romanians abroad are expected to exercise their electoral options in the 294 polling stations organized worldwide, the polling process having a 35 hours-span.
