‘Besides the estimates aired by all the television channels, we have a big reason for satisfaction: the referendum on the unicameral parliament and the cut of MP seats has been validated,’ said Basescu.
He argued that over 50 percent of the voters showed up for the referendum and 80 percent of them answered in the affirmative to both questions on the ballot paper – turning Parliament into a single-chamber body and cutting the number of MP seats.
‘This is a victory against a political class that was unwilling to answer to the Romanians’ requests,’ said Basescu. He mentioned that the outcome is impressive, given that this is the first referendum to be validated on turnout.
‘This indicates that politicians no longer have the right to disregard the people’s will when they know what that is. This referendum could have been avoided, had the parliamentary majority answered to my repeated requests to start off the Constitution revision. I am urging Parliament to convene the Constitution revision board in urgent session so that the will of Romanians may be reflected in the decision to revise the fundamental law of the country,’ said Basescu.
