President of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu ruled out on Monday any kind of collaboration with and support for incumbent President Traian Basescu ahead of the presidential runoff vote due on Dec. 6.

‘Traian Basescu is not a right-wing candidate. (…) Traian Basescu is a populist candidate who abused and who will abuse whatever means democratic rule,’ Antonescu told a press conference. In his opinion, a second term for the incumbent head of state ‘would be dramatic for the fate of the Romanian society.’ Antonescu said that as long as he stays in office as Liberal Party president, he would not back Basescu in the runoff.

‘I said that I am different, that I will run a different campaign and as long as I will be at the helm of PNL and on the public stage I will act consistently and otherwise than most Romanian politicians. I never went back on this.

Today, when I hear comments all over the place and expectations of bargaining, negotiations and positions, I want to clear a few aspects: what I have been saying for several years now, namely that any cooperation between myself and Traian Basescu is out of question stays in place, I rule out my support or the support my voters would give Traian Basescu upon my recommendation in the second ballot. As long as I am PNL president – and I am – I shut out any negotiation with Traian Basescu and the Liberal Democratic Party (PD-L) as long as it is steered by Traian Basescu from either Cotroceni or the Modrogan party seat,’ said Antonescu.

Crin Antonescu explained that however, support for Mircea Geoana in the second round of the presidential elections could be subject to negotiations if the Social-Democratic leader would accept what the Liberal called the ‘Johannis project.’ ‘I further believe in the Johannis project, which means an independent Prime Minister, a government formed on other criteria than those that have so far determined the establishment of governments.

A government not only headed by an independent, but which should join people from the political parties that make up the majority, appointed by criteria of competence and credibility, because 2010 will be a very difficult year. We need not only a government capable of addressing the crisis, but also a government capable of restoring the people’s confidence in the political act and the political class.

If we sit down for talks and come to terms on such a project that is not merely about the person of the Sibiu mayor as Premier, but emerges from a different vision and a different political practice, so if we agree, than we will see if we can provide support to the other candidate,’ announced Crin Antonescu. The Liberal leader said that any possible discussion in this regard will not tackle positions or various party shares in a future ruling line-up.

Antonescu specified that he did not yet discuss with Mircea Geoana, but that in the coming days he would meet with him and the leaders of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and the parliamentary group of national minorities as well. As a matter of fact, Antonescu said that he has not yet discussed with his own party, but would fight to impose his beliefs inside the formation under his lead.
