Geoana: Competition will start from scratch tomorrow

The election competition will start from scratch tomorrow, chief of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana said on Sunday evening. He thanked all Romanians who voted for him in the presidential election and for any other challengers except for Basescu, as well as his family, who have always been by his side.

Geoana promised respect to his political partners, with whom he said he wants to set up a stable, efficient and predictable government if he wins the December 6 presidential run-off. Geoana called on all Social Democrats to mobilise for the presidential run-off and on all undecided Romanians or disappointed in politics to join him for a European future and a Romania of unity and social cohesion, instead of a scandals and disunity that he claimed occurred under the five- year tenure of President Basescu.

‘This is a beautiful night for us and I want to extend my heartfelt tanks to all those who have voted for me and to all Romanians who showed up to vote,’ said the PSD chief, adding that, despite the attacks from his challengers, the electioneering campaign was a nice one that contributed to curing some ailments in the political environment.

‘Yet, the hardest work will only begin after December 6, probably after a euphoric political moment,’ said Geoana. ‘What unites us is more important that what disunites us,’ the PSD chief told the Romanians disaffected with politics who did no show up to vote in the November 22 presidential election. ‘If we are united nothing will be impossible,’ he said.

‘There are too many Romanians suffering today. As Romania’s President, I will bring to rule, by Christmas, a team made up by the most competent specialists of the parliamentary majority that we hope we will wisely offer Romania. We will provide political stability, influence and dignity to Romania in Europe and in the world,’ Geoana promised.

He said that 20 years after the anti-communist Revolution of December 1989, Romanians have won the right to free and fair elections saying he is very concerned by cases attesting to possible vote fraud. Geoana said that he voted in the referendum, but believes the way it was conducted was ‘an election gimmick of Traian Basescu.’
If he wins the presidential run-off of December 6, Geoana vows to set up a constitutional forum, a body to create the necessary framework for future referendums based on modifications in the Constitution.
