Geoana also announced PSD’s intention to enter a political agreement with the National Liberal Party (PNL) to mount a parliamentary majority after the December 6 presidential runoff. To this end, the PSD National Executive Committee will convene on Tuesday in a meeting to approve cooperation with PNL and analyse the November 22 election, where PSD argued detected some misdeeds resembling fraud.
Geoana called on all the political leaders of the country and the Romanians to cast a vote for change and the resumption of normalcy in Romania in the December 6 presidential runoff. ‘I want to thank once again to those who voted for me and extended their confidence in me, to my male and female colleagues who worked hard these weeks. But let bygones be bygones. What happens in the next two weeks has a much more important stake.
I want to call on all the political leaders of the country and Romanian to cast a vote for change and the resumption of normalcy in Romania in the December 6 presidential runoff. Today we are at a moment when the country desperately needs the chance for a new beginning, for political stability and a government to be installed before Christmas. I stay consequent to my position during canvassing, including the last televised debate, that we prefer a Socialist-Liberal majority.
In our opinion, this majority created around Mr. Klaus Johannis is standing a big chance and may materialise in a majority supporting Johannis for prime minister after December 6,’ said Geoana.
He added that the creation of Socialist-Liberal majority supporting Johannis for prime minister, will permit the people at rule to pay attention, after the runoff, to the problems that really matters to Romanians: the fight against crisis, winning back international credibility, massive investment in agriculture and industry, job creation, and, above all, resuming the climate of normalcy and responsibility in Romania.
Geoana also saluted what he said was ‘the mature and dignified’ manner in which the PNL chief, Crin Antonescu, on Monday presented the hard moment he faced on November 22.
‘That was not easy and, humanly speaking, I know, also from my experience, that such moments are not easy for a politician and a man, and I want to commend him for his seriousness and sobriety displayed when presenting that moment. I want to mention that we are ready and interested in creating these days, with our Liberal partners, a political agreement on establishing a majority after December 6.
I am promising Romanians that I will not be a president who sits and contemplates how governments are made, as unfortunately has been the case so far,’ said Geoana, reaffirming that he wants a competent government that will rebuild confidence in the institutions of the Romanian state. ‘If the Liberal partners and Mr. Crin Antonescu want to be our friends in such a process, I will be more than open and happy to reciprocate.
We will convene the Executive Committee of PSD for a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, because the decisions related to the majority will have to be approved my colleagues as well. Now we are headed for the presidential runoff, a moment of great import to Romania, and I am absolutely convinced that the lessons of the first round of election will be a topic for intense debate among my party colleagues,’ said the PSD chief Geoana.
