Industrial crop production exceeded 2.64 million tons last year. According to the MAPDR data, the output of sunflower seeds for 2009 reached 1.112 million tons, by only 5 percent lower than in 2008, when it stood at 1.170 million tons. As many as 787,200 hectares were cultivated with sunflower this year compared to 813,900 hectares in 2008.
The soya bean output stood at nearly 71,857 tons, while sugar beet production reached 560,744 tons on 85 percent of the surface (17,990 hectares). In 2008, the crop figures amounted to 90,600 tons of soya bean and 706,700 tons of sugar beet.
The industrial crop production skyrocketed by 85.4 percent in 2008 compared to the previous year, though the cultivated surface declined by 7 percent, from 1.340 million hectares in 2007 to 1.246 million hectares in 2008, according to the data with the National Statistics Institute (INS). Last year, output increases were reported by sunflower (2.1 times), rape (88.4 pct), while soya bean production lost 33.1 percent. The average production per hectare was 2.2 times higher in case of sunflower.
