Basescu, voted by 56.05 pct. of Romanians who turned out abroad

Incumbent Romanian President Traian Basescu, running for the second term in office as president with endorsement of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), won 56.05 percent of the overseas vote, followed by the National Liberal Party’s candidate (PNL) Crin Antonescu with 17.42 percent and the candidate of the Social Democratic Party’s (PSD) Mircea Geoana, who won 12.41 percent of the overseas vote, according to a release of the Overseas Election Office.

Thus, 52,904 of the 94,383 valid votes cast abroad went to Traian Basescu, 16,449 to Crin Antonescu and 11,717 to Mircea Geoana. The leader of the Greater Romania Party (PRM) Corneliu Vadim-Tudor obtained 5,080 percent of the votes cast abroad, independent candidate Sorin Oprescu obtained 3,190 and George Becali 2,285.

The UDMR candidate for President Hunor Kelemen won 999 of the votes abroad, while the Green candidate for president Remus Cernea obtained 949. There turned out to vote at the polling stations abroad a total of 95,068 Romanians, with 94,383 votes resulting valid. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) organized 294 polling stations abroad on November 22.
