BNR: Money supply M1 shrinks 2.9 pct in Oct.

The M1 money supply (narrow), including the currency in circulation, the current accounts and the checkable demand deposits amounted to 78.205 billion lei, namely about 18.4 billion euros, late in Oct., 2009, which means 2.9 percent smaller than in Sept. and by 14.7 percent down compared to Oct. 2008, read data Romania’s Central Bank (BNR) made public on Tuesday.

The cash in circulation totaled 23.704 billion lei, by 0.7 percent and 3.1 percent respectively, less, while the overnight deposits grossed 54.5 billion lei, by 3.9 percent and 19 percent, respectively, lower.

The M3 money supply (broader), including large time deposits, institutional money market funds, short-term repurchase agreements, along with other larger liquid assets grossed 183.992 billion lei, late in Oct. 2009. This M3 went up by 0.1 percent (-0.3 percent in real terms) than that in Sept. 2009, and by 13.2 percent (8.5 percent in real terms) higher than the money stock in Oct. 2008.
