The Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the leadership of the PSD+ Conservative Party (PSD+PC) Alliance on Tuesday unanimously decided to sign a political agreement with the National Liberal Party (PNL) and assemble a governmental majority that will endorse independent Klaus Johannis for Romania’s Prime Minister, PSD chief Mircea Geoana announced on Tuesday.

He told a new conference in the day that the agreement to be signed at 13:00 hrs, local, on Wednesday is for the time being an agreement on cooperating with PNL and other possibilities are left to be discussed after the December 6 presidential runoff, where Geoana will face off Traian Basescu.
Geoana said that the political agreement between PSD and PNL does not regard sharing the portfolios in the future Government, but just the principles for good governance that will secure political stability for the country and solutions to get the country out of the crisis.

‘No negotiations, no sharing agreement will happen before December 6; the agreement will be based solely on principles for good governance. There will be no discussions regarding the sharing of the portfolios. What we are interested in is a new concept for Romania, a modern concept,’ said Geoana.
He added that the future government programme will get inspiration from the PSD ‘Only One Romania’ programme, which will also include Liberal ideas, in an attempt to strike a balance between the role of the Government and that of the free market and find out in principle solutions against economic and social crisis.

Geoana mentioned that he will not hesitate to contact specialists from all political parties, underscoring that he will act to re-establish Romania’s influence in the world and also for Romania to meet its commitments to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Commission, which officials announced they intend to come to Bucharest in December.

The PSD chief hailed Crin Antonescu and PNL for their confidence placed in him, saying he is honoured by the confidence announcement, and also thanking for their support to Klaus Johannis during the electioneering campaign. He pointed out that the PSD-PNL majority will be the main act of governance and the majority will translate into cooperation for the future.
Geoana added that the unanimous decision of the PSD+PC leadership signifies the seriousness of its promises to the Liberal partners, mentioning that the decision about concluding a political agreement regards PNL exclusively. ‘A partnership that will continue into the future is now shaping up,’ said Geoana.

He also addressed the voters who did not vote for him and to those disappointed by politics and the undecided, telling them that if they elect him in the runoff he will try to be a poised president and stay a modest man who knows how to team up and for whom the words ‘unity and stability’ are part of his political creed.
‘Romania needs a new beginning and it is my ambition to give the best project, to build a united Romania that is modern and competitive, where social justice and entrepreneurship will be balanced,’ said Geoana.
