The Central Political Bureau (BPC) of the National Liberal Party (PNL) on Tuesday unanimously decided to support candidate of the alliance made up of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Conservative Party (PC) Mircea Geoana in the runoff of the presidential election, as a political agreement will be negotiated and signed, Liberal leader Crin Antonescu announced.

Antonescu presented a draft resolution adopted by the BPC, according to which the Liberals decide to support Geoana in the runoff, taking in consideration the ‘escalation of the conflict situation at institutional and social level.’
According to the cited document, in making this decision, PNL took in consideration the ‘political, economical and moral crisis Traian Basescu and his government have driven Romania into and the ever steeper degradation of the people’s living standards.’

Thus, the Liberals want a majority to be created to support a government headed by Klaus Johannis, a governing program to be worked out to get Romania out of the economic crisis, and also to support Mircea Geoana in the runoff, following the negotiation and signing of a political agreement underpinned by the basic principles of PNL.

The draft resolution approved by BPC also presents the objectives of the newly created majority, specifically: helping Romania out of the economic, political and moral crisis; ensuring political and institutional stability; ensuring good governing for Romania, based on the principles of competition, transparency, fairness and efficient and transparent spending of public money; the reform of the political class by promoting responsible political leaders dedicated to public interest; rebuilding Romania’s international prestige.

Antonescu added that BPC has mandated him to sign political agreements and hold negotiations with a view to signing these agreements. According to the Liberal leader, PNL prime vice-president Ludovic Orban was designated to negotiate a political agreement with PSD, whereas party vice-president Relu Fenechiu will act as coordinator of the negotiation of the governing program. ‘Should the agreement be inked, Ludovic Orban and Romeo Stavarache will coordinate PNL’s campaign efforts in the runoff,’ said Crin Antonescu.

He added that he would get personally involved in the election campaign if the agreement with PSD is signed. The PNL leader added that none of his colleagues in BPC opposed cooperation with PSD.
The PNL president made it clear, however, that the Liberals would not give up a series of elements that need to be set forth in the agreement with PSD, if this gets to materialize. One of the said points is the scrapping of the lump sum tax.

‘You know perfectly well what our essential governing program milestones are, they envisage in the first place the reduction of fiscality, measures to stimulate economic activity, the private business milieu, job generation, and – what is highly important for us – setting in place, restoring, rendering functional and improving a democratic balance among Romanian institutions,’ said Antonescu.
He expressed confidence that the agreement with PSD will be signed, and said that he wants this to happen as soon as possible.
