The signing of the document is seen by Geoana as a sign that 20 years after the anti¬communist Revolution of 1989 the country’s political forces can give up vested interests, ‘which have dominated the Romanian political life,’ and cooperate to the best interests of the country.
‘We are witnessing a political milestone. I want to thank Mr. Chairman Crin Antonescu and the partners from PNL for this moment, which is an important step toward securing political stability in Romania.
My entire canvassing was carried out and will continue to be carried out under the idea of unity, and I believe that the positive and mature forces of the society have to prove that they can unite their efforts to be able to assemble a government headed by Klaus Johannis and, under this agreement, to take Romania out of the crisis.
This agreement is for a long-term parliamentary majority; it is no office sharing agreement, but a political declaration of principles,’ said Geoana. He argued that, despite their different ideologies, PNL and PSD can meet within the governance framework on principles of social equity and dynamic economy.
If he is elected President in the December 6 runoff, Geoana vows to turn good, transparent and competent governance into his main act, something he says should also be top priority for Romania 20 years after its anti-communist revolution.
The PSD chief also insisted that the agreement with PNL is no ‘political haggling’ and no trading in votes, but catalysing the positive energies in the national interest. Geoana also said he is honoured by PNL accepting to sign the agreement and by PNL chief Crin Antonescu, one of his rivals in the November 22 first round of the presidential election, accepting to endorse him for the runoff.
‘This is a fight for Romania, and I am determined to win a good score on December 6, but the hardest part of it starts after December 6, when a consistent and efficient government programme will be needed,’ said Geoana. Geoana also said that a guarantee for the future good governance is the fact that neither he, nor Antonescu will get involved in the governance process.
