Traian Basescu’s spokesman added that several TV stations extended bids to organize such live debates and the presidential hopeful has accepted all those transmitted to him so far. One is the invitation of the Romanian public television for two debates, one of which would take place either on Monday, November 30, or on Tuesday, December 1, starting 9.10 p.m., while the second would take place on Friday, December 4, also at 9.10 p.m.
Realitatea TV and Antena 3 also sent invitations for Friday, December 4. Sever Voinescu said that TVR’s invitations for Monday and Friday were accepted, but mentioned that Antena 3 and Realitatea TV were asked to reschedule Wednesday and Thursday’s events.
‘Traian Basescu considers that in this phase of the campaign it is extremely useful for all voters to be able to watch the debates between the two candidates left in the race. We believe that given the broadness of the problems facing Romania, on one hand, and the issues specific for a President’s agenda on the other hand, there should be at least three such debates,’ said Voinescu.
He added that initiatives of non-governmental organizations are also welcome. ‘We express our conviction that in this stage at least three, if not more debates, are necessary between the two candidates. Initiatives by non-governmental organizations who tap our staff to this aim are also welcome. We want to give them a positive response, too,’ said Sever Voinescu.
