According to Detachment commander Lt. Col. Ionel Vasai, in the six-month training mission, the Romanians instructed about 1,200 – 1,300 Afghans. ANA TRAINING’s mission is to instruct and counsel officers and non-commissioned officers of the Afghan National Army during the preparation, planning, and execution of peacekeeping missions.
The first troops left on May 3, followed shortly by the other echelons, all servicemen being quartered with military bases in Kabul, as well as with four frontline “fire bases.” The detachment was organized by mobile instruction teams, and the Romanian soldiers tested their NATO standard professional training, said officials of the Romanian National Defense Ministry (MApN).
According to Lt. Col. Ionel Vasai, the Romanian troops encountered no unpleasant incidents during the mission. “We often passed by incidents, but they never occurred to us. It was a hot summer in Afghanistan, presidential elections were held, religious holidays with particular significance were celebrated. It was a time when the hazard trend was higher, but fortunately the Romanian troops were not involved in serious incidents,” said Lt. Col. Vasai.
He stressed that the Afghan soldiers undergo training and see their Romanian fellows as instructors. “They understood that we have come to support them, which is why we had a special relationship,” added the commander of the detachment.
