According to Polirom Publishing House, The Satanic Verses, the Enchantress of Florence and Midnight’s Children, were the mainly sought-for books for the autograph-signing session that took three hours, an event described as unprecedented, in the House’s history. It was an event that aroused the biggest interest in the history of the book fairs. People were queuing for autographs two hours before, Polirom’s general manager Silviu Lupescu told.
He stressed that the autograph-signing session began one hour earlier, with Salman Rushdie coming from Bran (central Romania) especially for it. Polirom officials say that there were sold between 8,000 and 10,000 books by Rushdie, with some people buying two or three copies.
Salman Rushdie met his readers at the Odeon Theater, in Bucharest, late on Tuesday, when he was reading fragments of his novel The Enchantress of Florence. The famous British Indian novelist and essayist’s visit to Romania ends on Thursday.
