‘This nomination is very important for Romania, while taking into account that the common agricultural policy represents one of European Union’s main pillars. (…) This portfolio is highly important also because of the budget allotted and the large number of people involved in activities related to the agriculture field and food industry This is a vote of confidence Romania very much needed to confirm its place in the EU’, Traian Basescu said in a statement at the Cotroceni presidential palace.
According to the head of the state, this nomination may also be regarded as a signal ‘for the need to adjust the common agricultural policy to the new realities after 12 new states have joined EU in the latest years’ in the EU.
‘It is obvious the common agricultural policy needs to be reviewed and adapted to the new realities. The 12 stated that were accepted in the EU in the latest years represent a motivation to review this policy. [...] For Romania, it is a very important diplomatic success, if you want, obtaining this portfolio, which also proves our capacity to reach important objectives as EU members’ Basescu said. He also underlined Dacian Ciolos is not a Romanian but a European Commissioner.
‘Nobody has the right to think Romania will be favoured because the European Commissioner for agriculture is Romanian. Romania will observe the status of an European Commissioner’, the head of the state added. Traian Basescu underlined Dacian Ciolos was supported by important political parties. ‘He was not backed only but the Chairman and the Government, but by other parties too.
The parliamentary parties supported his nomination. I believe thus we have obtained a diplomatic success, a very important one for us. nevertheless, the process will be very long, with the hearings of the new Commissioners following to begin no earlier than January. Until then, Mr. Ciolos needs to prepare for his own hearing’, Base scu said Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday announced the distribution of portfolios of the new European Executive, after on the EU Executive on Wednesday made public the list with those nominated by the 27 member states to become European Commissioners.
