Asked what solution he has in mind to counteract this alliance, Traian Basescu said: “There is no need to counteract this alliance. This alliance should prove if it enjoys the backing of the parliamentary majority or not. I do not want to buy the electorate’s votes in negotiations with the politicians, or to fool anyone. The only alliance I see for a candidate for President is the alliance with the people. We have no other variant.”
Basescu reiterated that he has no intention to dissolve Parliament, for that would be a great error to have parliamentary elections following on the heels of the presidential runoff. He criticized the PSD-PNL alliance, accusing it of “playing an irresponsible game’ and of mistakenly considering that by ’successively toppling governments and blocking the appointment of a Prime Minister it can win votes.”
Referring to the election campaign he will be running in the coming period, Basescu said that he would further do what he has done so far, namely mingle with the common Romanians, “because that’s where the power of a politician roots.’
