Antonescu, who came in third in the November 22 first round of the election, said that although he is supporting Mircea Geoana for the runoff, he will not abdicate his Liberal principles.
‘I want to be clear that yes I will attend joint electoral events with Mircea Geoana. But, although I am doing this I will not for a moment abdicate the principles for which I ran or my statements about Mircea Geoana.
I am doing this because I have the courage of my own convictions. I am also a subscriber to great causes. Romania’s main cause is to oust Traian Basescu. I will go to Brasov, where there is significant support, where I won a significant number of votes and where I want to be this evening alongside Mircea Geoana to make a public statement. I do not like equivocation in politics, which some consider wisdom,’ said Antonescu.
Asked by a journalist if he still sees the PSD chief as a ‘demagogue,’ as he said during the evening before the first round of the presidential election where he debated Geoana and Traian Basescu, Antonescu said that ‘Mircea Geoana is indeed a demagogue, but a less dangerous one than Traian Basescu, who is the greatest demagogue in Romania.’
‘From this perspective, I have nothing to take back and no doubt about my option. Geoana is a politician who has some unfulfilled political promises. I hope that in the time ahead, as Romania’s President and supported by his political partners, me included, Geoana will be a man that will fulfil his electoral pledges,’ Antonescu concluded.
