Geoana: Taxation will not be changed

Information in English

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party + Conservative Party (PSD+PC) Alliance Mircea Geoana told the public radio station on Friday that the alliance with the National Liberal Party (PNL) does not aim to increase rates and taxes, deeming such information lies.

‘It is a blatant lie and the kind of demagoguery which Mr. Boc and Mr. Basescu have been using for too long, and I believe that is the reason why they are not gaining popular traction.

No, we have a programme where we state it highly clear that the taxation system as is will not change and if we have resources – and I hope we will get resources very soon – then we will proceed with reducing taxation to reach where I have suggested to go when we have resources, because we have an obligation to the International Monetary Fund and an obligation to be serious about the macroeconomic balance of this country,’ said Geoana, adding the Value-Added Tax and the social security contributions will be reduced if there are resources.

He mentioned that resources can be obtained by limiting the underground economy, where he claimed almost one third of the Gross Domestic Product (PSD) is being circulated, between 26 and 43 billion euros a year derived from contraband, illegal cigarette sales, illegal alcohol sales and oil sales ‘sometimes in collusion with politicians, state bodies and Mafiosi.’
