“Joking a little, we would like the Pericei onion alone to be used in Brussels and in all kitchens in the European Union,” mayor Csaba Boncidai told on Saturday. The above-mentioned village is a traditional onion grower. Pericei is famous for its two world records: the longest rope of onion and the biggest monument to the onion, this latest record having been homologated this week.
According to historical documents, onion has been grown on vast areas at Pericei as far back as the 1600s-1700s. This plant was being commercialized in the last 19th century far away from its place of origin. The mayor explained that what is quite specific about the Pericei onion is the fact that it is grown from seedlings, by being planted again, and that, for this very reason, it cannot be planted by machines.
It has a very good taste too, which also comes from the fact that, in that area, onion has favourable climate conditions and a good soil. President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso on Friday nominated Dacian Ciolos for the post of European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. His mother was born at Pericei, a place where Dacian Ciolos’s 80-year old grandfather also lives.
