Information in English

President Traian Basescu requested the National Institute of Criminal Expertise on Monday to issue a specialised advice that should establish whether the video footage apparently showing him hitting a 10-year-old boy during a 2004 campaign rally that was circulated by Gardianul daily and then broadcast by the televisions contains traces of technical alteration, the Presidential Administration said in a release.

The Romanian president had announced at the end of last week he would sue businessman Dinu Patriciu and Gardianul. ‘I am suing Dinu Patriciu and Gardianul for lie and for faking video footage. I’m doing this because they unveiled a fake video. First and foremost, I believe that the press that has circulated a fake video should answer a few elementary questions.

Firstly, whether the video was verified at the National Expertise Institute before being publicly broadcast’, Basescu said. In an interview with Gazeta Sporturilor sports daily on Monday, Basescu announced he had contacted experts accredited by the Justice Ministry and they had asked for the original video and the camera it was shot by. He stressed the lawsuit will force Patriciu to produce the evidence, which can only be the original video.
Gardianul daily last week released video footage of a 2004 campaign rally held in the southern Ploiesti city showing Basescu apparently hitting a child.
