Republic of Moldova: Voter turnout by 4:00 p.m. exceeds total participation in first round

7 decembrie 2009

Information in English

About 9,100 persons cast ballots in the second round of Romania’s presidential elections by 4:00 p.m., a number exceeding the total turnout of some 8,900 persons in the first round held on November 22.

According to the staff of the Romanian Embassy, this is due to the simplified procedure requiring the voter to submit only one bona fide statement that he/she has not previously voted and neither will do so after that, and the stamping of just one ballot paper. Moreover, many citizens complete the statement before entering the polling stations.

Queues had built up during morning hours in front of the Chisinau polling stations, but they disappeared at noon. Some voters came to stand in line before 7:00 a.m., the hour the stations opened.
