Francu (PNL): Liberals will be governing again in 6 months, at the most

Liberal Senator Emilian Francu on Thursday told a press conference held at the PNL (National Liberal Party) headquarters that the party will return at the helm either side by side with PD-L (Democratic Liberal Party) or with PSD (Social Democratic Party) and UDMR (the National Union of Democratic Hungarians in Romania).

‘There are two possible scenarios I believe they might happen. The Boc Cabinet will be forced to step down from power via motion of censure, with Traian Basescu to face the following dilemma: either he will nominate an independent Premier, maybe even one close to PD-L, with us the Liberals to join the project, either he remains the same stubborn with appointing a Democrat Liberal, and he will face impeachment as consequence.

As long as he is being impeached, Mircea Geoana, the Senate Speaker will become a caretaker President and he will nominate a new Premier to represent the PSD¬PNL-UDMR coalition’, Francu said. According to the Liberal MP, ‘the key of the future majority will be attracting UDMR’. ‘We could not rely on the independents, for they are being paid by the PD-L.

They tried to pay me too, with 200,000 euros. Thus, UDMR is the secret beyond this matter; it is the very key to the future motion of censure. For now, UDMR is joining PD-L at rule for they were promised Law on Minorities would be debated under an emergency procedure’, Francu said. The Liberal Senator also told that Crin Antonescu backing up Mircea Geoana on December 6 was a huge mistake, the same as the exaggerated joy on the faces of the Liberals, based on no more than the exit polls results.

‘But the hugest of the mistakes on behalf of the Liberals was represented by the negotiations at the Cotroceni (the Presidential Palace) having been handled by a small team of five people too early deciding the party would remain in opposition. Our position there was not at all flexible, otherwise we might have joined power by now, maybe with an independent Premier, even one close to the PD-L’, Francu said.
Nevertheless, Francu added that Antonescu still remains the best leader for PNL. ‘Crin Antonescu guided this party to a very good score in the elections, in such regions of the country PNL was never very well positioned’, Emilian Francu concluded.
