The Cathedral has the Holy Girdle of the Virgin Mary as its dedication day and it shelters the relics of the first Lipovan Metropolitan Bishop Ambrosie. It is here that the priests to officiate in the Old-Rite Christian Orthodox Churches, worldwide, are ordained. The Lipovans had three churches erected in Braila, two in the Pisc district that became a sort of home country to the Lipovans, and the third, in the Old Center of the town, and which is the Metropolitan Cathedral, nowadays, and whose building began in 1856.
The Cathedral, built in the Neo-Classical and the Romantic styles, with Byzantine, ancient and Gothic elements was declared a historical monument in 1996.
In 1940, when the Soviet Army invaded and occupied Bucovina, the 7th Metropolitan Bishop of the Lipovan believers, Siluan was forced to leave Fantan Alba (currently located in Ukraine) and moved to Braila.
Thus, since 1940, Braila has become the spiritual center of the Lipovans living in Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, US, France, Australia, Germany, Italy, Georgia and other countries all over the world. The relics of Bishop Ambrosie, who died and was buried in exile, in Trieste (Italy), were brought to the Metropolitan Cathedral in Braila, in 2000.
