The ministry says the safety situation in the region is strongly affected by both the large-scale piracy activities and the fights among the various political and military factions. MAE recommends the Romanian citizens not to embark on vessels whose navigation circuit gets closer to the Somali coast of the Indian Ocean, since the risk for them to be captured by the pirates has raised. Such seizures are frequent and motivated, usually, by reward for release demands, the Romanian MAE says.
MAE also says that Romania has no diplomatic or consular representation in Somalia. For any demands of consular assistance, the diplomatic mission empowered by the Romanian authorities to act officially in Somalia is the Romanian Embassy in Sudan, but MAE says that there are “narrow possibilities of consular intervention of the embassy in another country in the region”.
Currently, the Somali pirates have captured several vessels with Romanian sailors aboard. In 2009 as well several Romanian citizens were hijacked by the Somali raiders, and they were released after months of sufferings.
