‘This solution was dictated by the situation last year, with the Ministry of Finance having no other option to cut the expenses in the budget sector.
But since we have frozen wages in this sector this year, we no longer need to apply such measure’, Videanu explained. As regards the restructuring of the public sector, the Minister underlined this would be a highly efficient process and he also added that ‘we all have the duty to restructure the public spending’.
‘I offer you the example of my Ministry. We will only keep 750 of the 900 employees we have right now. There exist such departments within the Ministry overlapping their competencies and I don’t see why we should keep them. I will make a selection at the Ministry so that we would be able to go on with the restructuring in order to increase the efficiency of the state institutions and also to succeed in better handling the public money,’ Videanu also added.
In the latest two months, in 2009, the employees in the public system were sent in a 10-day unpaid holiday. By applying this measure, the government obtained savings to the state budget estimated at 1.3 billion le i, as the result of a cut in the employees’ wages by 15 percent per month.
