Swans living in Siberia are on Danube, at Drobeta

12 ianuarie 2010

Information in English

Early this year thirty-three swans living in Siberia reached the Danube, near Ostrovul Corbului, which is situated 16 km away from the city of Drobeta-Turnu Severin (south-west of Bucharest, close to the Danube entering Romania).

Manager of the Mehedinti County Association of Hunters and Fishermen Cornel Popa told on Monday that this species of swans, which is protected by the law and declared a natural monument, originated in Siberia, from where it migrated because of the bitter frost.

“In the past ten years swans have been taking refuge to our area where, due to the sub- Mediterranean climate, they find the favourable conditions for survival and even for making their nests,” said Popa. According to him, swans have become an attraction both for the local people and for tourists, who take photos with them whenever they can.
